passion

27 august 2010

a couple of months ago, someone close to me asked whether i felt photography is what i’m going to to do for the rest of my life. before i get into that, though, let me preface this by saying that this someone is presently in the process of searching for something to be passionate about. so, do i love what i do? for the rest of my life? YES and yes.

i’ve had a variety of jobs in my life. i’ve held the title of busboy, stockroom assistant, assistant gymnastics coach, army medic, emt, bicycle sales associate, fishing pole fabricator, paramedic, web developer, information architect and yes, photographer. though, it seems, i’ve always been a photographer, it wasn’t until sometime during the web’s boom that i’d entertained the idea of making any money at it. as with any passion, i’d like to imagine, if i didn’t need to eat i’d have earned enough just from accolades from friends and future clients. i was never formally trained in photography but i did read stacks and stacks of books on light, composition, and anything having to do with taking a better picture.

spend any time with me and you’ll find that i think, live, and breathe photography. whether it’s planning the next shoot, researching light and imagery, or, as is my least favorite part of this job, stuck to the computer screen editing photography, i can say with a resounding yes, i love what i do. i can honestly say that i’m passionate about what i do. (the editing part, however, a vital part of this “job”, though bothersome as it takes much longer than the actual image capture, is my least favorite part of the job. but, even then, i still love that too.) i’ve always loved so many different creative endeavors but photography’s something that stuck.

i equate passion as loving something without an inkling of want for monetary gain; you do it because it makes you feel good or makes you happy. how do you find that something to be passionate about? i can only say you’ll have to keep trying different things until something captures your heart like photography captured mine.

03 sep 2010 – addition . . .
if you’re like me, a passionate person to begin with, you’ll learn that all of the rules of photography are more like guidelines in that if you work outside of them you may find what works and what doesn’t. (learn those “rules,” though!!) and, if your passion fades or needs a little nudge, don’t be afraid to try some other artistic medium to express yourself–if you’re a photographer, like me, try painting or pottery or GLASSBLOWING (something i’ve always wanted to try but you know the deal) or any other artist’s medium until something changes the flow of energy and you feel the passion embers stoke the fire.

(because i lack a backup camera these days i’m a little more judicial about shooting–which kills me as i’m always seeing shots when out and about!! these are shots from a recent trip back east.)

a few words about lighting . . .

11 july 2010

one of the things i hear the most when someone looks at my book is something along the lines of “i really like how you use the natural light . . . ” or “i like how your shots look so natural without lighting . . . ”

the truth is, i usually light everything.  yes, i can be a control freak at times when it comes to beautiful imagery.  when people say things like the aforementioned statements i smile internally but with a bit of pride.

when i started out, i was a paramedic and a web designer on the side, shooting things clients needed for their websites as needed.  one day, i had the pleasure of designing a new website for hawaii-based photographer, dana edmunds.  i had little clue how to create the images he created but i stared at his imagery for a solid two months.  my love affair with photography, up to that point, was still blossoming but i had to know more about how he created such beautiful soft light so i arranged to sit in on a shoot of his which happened to be for my next client, the chart house in waikiki; a food shoot.  i’ll admit, i learned more in that one day about light than, well, ever.  it was only a few hours.  dana and his assistant did not set up one light but still managed to bring in tons of light into the chart house’s very dimly lit restaurant.

a year later, after working as a medic on several big production films (tears of the sun, fifty first dates, etc.) i learned how to light in a BIG way.  i was like a sponge on set, learning everything i could about how they lit a scene.  i picked the brains of the gaffers and grips without sacrificing my duties as a medic, mind you.  i spent a lot of time figuring out how to recreate that “big budget” light with material i found a fabric stores and lowes.  i made it a point of learning everything i could about light on those and other movie sets.  when the movies came out later, i understood, more, why they setup the way they did.  this was around the time film started heading out the door with the advent of six and twelve megapixel cameras.  digital helped me learn more quickly as i no longer had to wait for snips or whatever at the film lab–happiness was a button-push away.

i bought books about lighting a studied them.  i carried them and my camera with me everywhere.  i found photographers that had imagery similar to what i wanted to shoot and studied them.  it became an obsession . . . so much so that i can look at any image and recreate the light.  it’s still an obsession.

i’ve been thinking about this post for some time now as we’re picking up an intern this week.  i know she has a blossoming love affair with light.  i look forward to seeing their relationship grow!

comments . . .

08 june 2010

so, since we’re relatively new to the blogging world, we’ve discovered that hackers across the planet love comment sections.  went back and forth on this but we’re going to keep the comment sections available under each post and approve of comments, which kinda blows but the best we can do.

last evening, we got little presents from brazil, sweden, germany, japan, holland and ireland . . . thank you for those!
